Baroque is an artistic style that prevailed in Europe from 1600 to 1750. Baroque art covers the entire artistic field, including painting, music, architecture, decorative arts, etc. Its characteristics break away from the seriousness, subtlety, and balance of the Renaissance period, advocating luxury and grandeur, focusing on the expression of strong emotions, and achieving compelling artistic effects.

Baroque paintings are renowned for their dramatic expressions and exaggerated scene settings, with richly detailed depictions that often deliver a strong visual impact to viewers. At the art exhibition, the students were deeply captivated by these works. They lingered in the exhibition, stopping before each painting to meticulously appreciate how the masters narrated stories through contrasts of light and shadow and vivid colors.

Caravaggio, as an early representative painter of the Baroque period, is undoubtedly a leading figure in this artistic style. His works are known for their realistic style and possess a dramatic chiaroscuro effect akin to theatrical lighting, introducing a new style to painting and laying an important foundation for the development of Baroque painting. His innovative techniques not only had a profound influence on his contemporaries but also provided a rich source of inspiration for later Baroque artists.

One of Caravaggio's representative works is 'Boy with a Basket of Fruit'. Previously, students could only satisfy their curiosity by looking at photos of the work in class, but this time they finally saw the painting in person! Completed around 1593, this work demonstrates Caravaggio's exquisite painting skills, especially in the handling of light and shadow and the detailed depiction. The fruits in the painting are realistically textured and vividly colored, appearing lifelike through the clever use of light. This painting is not only a still life but also reveals the inner world of the figure.

The Surrealism movement originated about a hundred years ago in the early 1920s. It aimed to transcend the conventional boundaries of the real world, exploring dreams, unconscious thoughts, and scenes beyond logic. This movement was initially proposed by French poet André Breton, who articulated its philosophy in the 'Surrealist Manifesto' published in 1924.

Surrealist artists sought to break the bonds of traditional thinking through various techniques and methods, including automatic writing, the chance generation of images, and dream analysis, all aimed at revealing deeper psychological truths. In visual arts, Surrealism is characterized by distorted figures, absurd scenarios, and dream-like image combinations, often rich in symbolic meaning.

Surrealist works, while seemingly absurd, are richly symbolic. Compared to the exquisite skills of Baroque artists, the ideas of Surrealist artists are more likely to provoke deep reflection among the students.

Prominent Surrealist artists include Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, and Frida Kahlo. Their works often challenge the audience's imagination and perceptual boundaries with their astonishing visual impact and profound symbolic meanings. A series of works by these artists were also displayed in this exhibition. The students also created commemorative paintings to mark their visit.

Art is far more than just a painting or a sculpture; it is a continuation of culture and a representation of thoughts. Each painting and sculpture carries the emotions of the artist and the imprint of the era. From the exhibitions, we can interpret the life stories of the masters and taste the evolution of the times. Standing in the exhibition, aren't we too crossing through the years, listening to the dialogues of the past?
