A spring breeze glides over the River Cam, carrying with it the heritage of a century-old institution, crossing mountains and seas, and stirring dreams into motion. On the afternoon of 23 April, Dr Charles Weiss, an official admissions interviewer for the University of Cambridge, visited Minxin School. From an information-packed keynote to intimate group discussions, Dr Weiss engaged deeply with Minxin students — offering rare insights into what it takes to gain admission to one of the world’s most renowned universities.

当天下午，中学部的学生们齐聚高昇讲堂，以热烈的掌声欢迎Charles Weiss博士的到来。在讲座正式开启前，总校长潘淑娴博士代表全校师生，向Weiss博士赠送了一份特别的礼物——由G9P班黄昊威同学精心绘制的中国画《江南春晓》。此画不仅展现了东方艺术的独特韵味，更寓含了对Weiss博士此次访问的美好祝愿与深切谢意。Weiss博士向潘总校长及赠画的学生表达了谢意，并盛赞了民心学子的艺术造诣。

The event began with students from the Secondary Division gathering in Sunrise Theatre, welcoming Dr Weiss with enthusiastic applause. Before the lecture commenced, Dr Poon presented a special gift on behalf of the school: a traditional Chinese painting titled "Spring Morning in Jiangnan", beautifully created by Vincent Huang of Class G9P. The artwork not only showcased the elegance of Eastern artistic tradition but also expressed warm wishes and sincere gratitude for Dr Weiss’s visit. In response, Dr Weiss expressed heartfelt thanks to Dr Poon and the student artist, and warmly praised the artistic talent of Minxin students.

The session opened with two student representatives sharing their reflections on a summer study tour at Cambridge. They spoke of their academic discoveries, campus exploration, and memorable experiences — conveying a strong sense of admiration for the historic university. Dr Weiss listened attentively, nodding and smiling as they spoke.

随后，在师生们热烈的掌声中，Weiss博士开始了主题为“你好，剑桥”的讲座分享，引领大家一同揭开剑桥大学的神秘面纱。Weiss博士以生动幽默的语言，从剑桥大学独树一帜的教育体系、其成功背后的秘诀、严谨的招生流程与选拔标准以及深厚的文化符号等四个维度，进行了全面而深入的介绍。这场精彩的讲座极大拓宽了民心学子们的认知边界，让他们得以一窥剑桥大学独一无二的风采。

To a wave of applause, Dr Weiss began his keynote speech titled “Understanding Cambridge”. With engaging humour and clarity, he introduced students to the unique world of Cambridge University. Covering four key areas — the university’s distinctive educational model, the secrets of its success, the rigorous admissions and selection process, and its rich cultural symbolism — Dr Weiss painted a vivid and inspiring portrait of what makes Cambridge one of a kind. The lecture broadened students’ horizons and sparked fresh ambitions.

讲座中，Weiss博士详尽介绍了剑桥大学独特的学院制与学术部门并行的“双系统”结构，这种在全球罕见的模式，仅牛津大学可与之媲美。此外，他还阐述了英国教育体系中强调的“专精”理念：高中阶段，学生仅需深入研习三门科目，进入大学后则更是专注于单一学科，这与美国式的“主修+辅修”制度形成了鲜明对比。谈及“Oxbridge”这一符号时，博士指出它不仅是牛津与剑桥两所顶尖学府合称的代名词，更是两校悠久历史传统与精英教育理念共享的象征。

Dr Weiss offered an in-depth explanation of the university’s rare dual system: the coexistence of its collegiate structure alongside academic faculties and departments — an arrangement shared only with Oxford. He also explored the UK’s emphasis on academic specialisation, where students focus on just three A-Level subjects in secondary school, and continue into university with a single subject focus. This approach stands in contrast to the American model of combining majors and minors.

While discussing the term "Oxbridge", Dr Weiss noted that it represents far more than a nickname — it symbolises the deep-rooted traditions and shared ideals of academic excellence that unite Oxford and Cambridge.

One of the most anticipated parts of the session was Dr Weiss’s guidance on Cambridge admissions. Drawing on his extensive experience as an interviewer, he shared invaluable advice on how students can make their applications stand out, avoid common errors, and approach the admissions process with confidence.

Following the lecture, Dr Weiss met with a smaller group of students for an in-depth face-to-face discussion in the school’s reception room. Eager to seize the moment, students asked thoughtful questions about the application process, interview strategies, and how to navigate potential challenges. The atmosphere was lively, open, and intellectually engaging.
